Welcome to Year 5

Curriculum map Year 5

Our Learning

We have 20 wonderful pupils and an exciting year of learning ahead of us. Some of our interesting topics this year are: The Vikings, Space and Ancient Greeks. Children will also be continuing to learn brass as part of their music lesson.

Reading

We do lots of different reading activities in year 5. Reading is a fundamental part of your child’s learning and it will support them across all of their subjects in school. Fluent reading is crucial in order to be able to retrieve and infer from the text. Whilst hearing your child read every night, it is beneficial to ask them questions such as:

  • What do you predict will happen next? Why?
  • How do you think the character is feeling?
  • Why do you think the character did that?
  • Are there any words you are unsure of?
  • Can you summarise what has happened so far?

We complete daily reading groups in school. At home, your child should be reading for a minimum of 15 minutes every night. Your child will still need to bring their reading book to school every day for group reading.

Children can access Reading Plus at home with their logins – https://student.readingplus.com/seereader/api/sec/login

Spelling

Spelling homework will be sent home on a Monday. Your child should learn their weekly words every night in preparation for their test on the Friday. During Year 5 we will be revisiting spelling rules from year 4 and then learning the Year 5 spelling rules alongside. All children will be given common exception words to learn alongside. It can be useful to do practice tests at home which again can help your child identify any areas they are struggling in.

Maths

Quick times tables recall will support your child across all of our maths topics this year. Short bursts of Times Tables Rockstars will help your child to maintain their memory of multiplication facts up to 12×12. Times tables homework will be issued every Monday for some children, please ensure this is completed by the given date in order to support their learning.

PE

Our PE days are on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child comes to school in the correct PE kit on these days.
